Skullcap is a North American plant that grows wild all over the United States and Canada. I was lucky enough to discover it growing in my little town of Lake Park. Skullcap is a versatile herb used to treat nervous conditions such as anxiety, epilepsy, pain, and recovery from addiction. It works well in acute situations and can be taken over time to decrease chronic stress with its ability to strengthen and nourish a depleted nervous system.
As a relaxing nervine, skullcap herb is often used to relax a busy mind and/or tense muscles that can’t relax enough naturally to fall asleep.
Well-known North American Herbalist Michael Moore describes skullcap as “a nerve sedative for any condition characterized by oversensitivity of the peripheral nerves.” According to Moore, skullcap is “a sure treatment for almost any nervous system malfunction of mild or chronic nature, from insomnia or fear, to nervous or sick headaches from stress.”
Besides salves and other topical preparations, skullcap is taken as a tea, in capsule form, or tincture. It is also on the list of legal smoke-able herbs.
